FRENCH COUNTRY CHARISMA!
A delightful clapboard farmhouse sits serenely against a riot of color from an exuberant country garden. Designer Helene Aumont has created a chic Provencal style residence in the turn-of-the-century village of Ballard in the Santa Ynez Valley.
Effortlessly elegant, the residence has been beautifully appointed with a well edited mix of furniture, art and antiques. Aumont renovated a simple farm house by expanding a small kitchen to include a breakfast room overlooking the fruit orchard and stables plus adding a screened summer porch, sleeping porches off of the master and an additional second story bedroom and bath. The complement of indoor-outdoor rooms offer whimsical sanctuaries to eat, read and enjoy simple pleasures.
The home was originally designed to mimic the simplicity of an East Coast Salt Box with distressed pine floors, double-hung windows and crown moldings. With the addition of multiple porches, a luxurious master wing and expansive fourth bedroom/bath, the house now boasts approximately 3,700 sq. ft. of interior space. Views of mountains, vineyards and horse farms are seen from every aspect.
The kitchen is a delightfully sunny room with luscious painted cabinetry (including an 18th century antique corner cabinet with secret compartment from Charentes) and a marble topped bar from the South of Franch created from an old billiard table. Not to be missed is the charming powder room with upholstered walls and 17th cent. Turkish vessel sink.
A limestone fireplace warms the living and music rooms and silk taffeta curtains create the ambiance of a Parisian apartment. The master wing is entered through a pair of eighteenth-century Venetian painted and gilded carved wooden doors. A lovely 19th century fireplace enhances this spacious room with French doors leading to sleeping porches off both sides. His and hers baths offer a steam shower behind seamless glass and beautiful marble flooring offset with sexy euro faucets and hardware.
The main living areas open to a screened porch which provides the focal point for gracious outdoor living. From this vantage, one can enjoy the lush gardens and pool. Surrounded by an expansive lawn and edged in limestone, the pool is reminiscent of a European reflecting pond with an old stone fountain spilling water onto the surface. In the distance, a Bohemian tented room is the perfect spot for meditation or a romantic hideaway with a glass of wine.
Kitchen gardens, herb gardens behind antique iron gates, fruit trees and a century of garden lore provide ample produce and flowers for the home and more than a few friends. The residential improvements are augmented with a charming art studio/office with kitchenette, bath and sleeping loft.
The five plus acre parcel is studded with ancient oaks and is completed by a nostalgic 4 stall barn with a large tack room, fenced paddocks and arena.
Pepper Hill is the culmination of a dream by a talented French designer and her family who prove that gearing a life toward the senses is “Le Must”!
