Rancho Corral de Quati

This historic ranch is located several hours north of Los Angeles on the California coast in the Santa Ynez Valley. It is in an ideal setting on Foxen Canyon Road four miles from the town of Los Olivos surrounded by thousands of acres of cattle ranches, country farms and internationally known vineyards including those of Firestone, Fess Parker, Zaca Mesa and Andrew Murray. The San Rafael Mountains provide a majestic backdrop.

The ranch’s 256 acres is dramatically beautiful with a sweeping mesa of prime land spotted with hundreds of ancient Valley and Coast Live Oak trees. It is a pastoral and peaceful environment that is a prime example of California rural landscape. The location, the land and the setting cannot be duplicated.

The ranch improvements are surrounded by irrigated horse pastures with split rail fencing, trees and mature landscaping. Some of the structures date back to the early part of the 20th century. The ranch-style homes are classic bat and board and brick red and the barns are redwood exterior. All the buildings, including the newer structures, are faithful to the style and feel that is typical of a turn of the century ranch.

The main residence has a living room with vaulted ceilings, wood floors and an old river rock fireplace, a study, a dining room, country kitchen with a pantry and service porch and two more bedrooms and baths that were servant’s quarters, a master bedroom with a bath, sauna and walk-in closet and three additional bedrooms each with its own bathroom. Additional amenities include a tennis court and a pool, a pool house and a guest house. There are two more houses, each with three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The horse improvements include a 20 stall center aisle barn and a foaling barn with five stalls, a vet area, a loft observation apartment and a manager’s office.

The two agricultural wells have the reported capability of producing 400 G.P.M. and 200 G.P.M. respectively. There is a domestic well that has tested at 120 G.P.M.

The ranch’s recent history began in 1845 when Augustin Davilla received the original land grant. From that time forward, the nation’s movers-and-shakers have called Rancho Corral De Quati home. In the early 1940s, Frances “Duke” Sedgewick, whose roots date back to Colonial Massachusetts, purchased the property and moved his family to the ranch where Edie, his youngest daughter, was born. In the mid-1960s Edie rose to prominence in New York as one of Andy Warhol’s “Superstars.” In the 1970s, Ray Stark, the legendary Hollywood film producer, talent agent and deal maker bought the ranch. The Santa Ynez Valley property was his private retreat until his recent passing.

Santa Ynez, a coastal inland valley with rolling pastureland and hills spotted with majestic oak trees, is home to some of the world’s most renowned vineyards, wineries and horse farms. It has become the place to escape from the pressures of urban life because it integrates the beauty of its natural setting with the most sophisticated amenities. Air travel is easy. Santa Ynez has a private airport that can accommodate large twin-engine planes and some executive jets. Nearby Santa Barbara has a convenient airport that features major airlines with access to connecting flights for national/international travel.
